Attentive to the Lord's Commands

Patrozinium Hl. Gallus
27. Oktober 2019 – Lichtensteig
Genesis 12, 1-4a
Matthäus 19, 27-29

Gelobt sei Jesus Christus!

Gelobt sei Jesus Christus!
Heiliger Gallus, Bitte für uns!

With a Humble and Contrite Heart open to Mary

Memoria della Beata Vergine Maria del Rosario
Monastero Clarisse SS. Francesco e Chiara
7 ottobre 2019 - Cademario
Atti 1, 12-14
Luca 1, 26-38

Intercessory Prayer with Mary from the Heart of the Church

27ª Domenica in Tempo Ordinario
6 ottobre 2019 - Cademario
Hb 1:2-3; 2:2-4
2 Tm 1:6-8, 13-14
Lk 17:5-10

No!

Caritas Christi Urget Nos

Jubiläumsgottesdienst
100 Jahre Missionsbenediktiner in Uznach
Abtei St. Otmarsberg - 29. September 2019
Jes 55, 6-11
Apg 2, 42-47
Lk 24, 42-49

Gelobt sei Jesus Christus!

100 Jahre Missionsbenediktiner in Uznach!

Gelobt sei Jesus Christus!

Throwing down the gauntlet?

A lay Catholic friend from the States just sent me a link to an interview with Father Davide Pagliarani, Superior General of the SSPX, today published on the Fraternity's News Site (here). Being versed in the ways of the Midwest, he did not need to elaborate on his intent for me a man of the high plains. Apart from the wealth contained in the whole interview, I am sure my friend wanted me as a prelate to face up to and deal with that last question:

"What does the Society expect from the prelates and faithful who are beginning to see clearly, in order to give a positive and effective follow-up to their positions?

"It is necessary for them to have the courage to recognize that even a sound doctrinal position will not suffice if it is not accompanied by a pastoral, spiritual and liturgical life consistent with the principles to be defended, because the Council has inaugurated a new way of conceiving the Christian life, consistent with its new doctrine.

"If true Catholic doctrine is reaffirmed in all its rights, one must begin to live a real Catholic life in conformity with what one professes. Otherwise, this or that declaration will remain only a media event, limited to a few months, even a few weeks... In concrete terms, one must exclusively embrace the Tridentine Mass and all that it means; one must exclusively embrace the Catholic Mass and draw all the consequences from it; one must exclusively embrace the non-ecumenical Mass, the Mass of all time and let this Mass regenerate the lives of the faithful, communities, seminaries, and especially let it transform priests. It is not a question of simply restoring the Tridentine Mass because it is the best theoretical option; it is a question of restoring it, living it, and defending it until martyrdom, because only the Cross of Our Lord can rescue the Church from the catastrophic situation in which it finds itself."

Portæ inferi non prævalebunt adversus eam!
The gates of hell will not prevail against her!"

[Father Davide Pagliarani, Superior General, Menzingen, September 12, 2019, Feast of the Holy Name of Mary]

No doubt my yesterday's reading coming and going in the car from the Swiss Bishops' Conference had an impact on me as well: Michael Davies book, "St. Athanasius: defender of the faith" ©2011, Angelus Press. Kindle Edition.

Davies quotes soon to be Saint J.H. Newman on the Arian heresy observing that, despite an almost universal apostasy among the clergy, Catholic faith triumphed because the laity were firmly grounded in the truth. With St. Athanasius and other faithful bishops and priests, they who were grounded in the basics of the truth resisted emperors and heretics. Catholic faith reasserted itself in little more than the one man's lifetime, St. Athanasius. The Lord does not leave His flock untended even in the darkest hour.

Oremus ad invicem!
Let us pray for the counsel we so dearly need in uncertain times and for the shepherds to guide us after the Heart of Christ Himself!

The Terms of the Discourse

I thought it particularly important the other day to note on my Facebook timeline a OnePeterFive article from Peter Kwasniewski, Discerning the Priesthood: One Form or Two Forms? Why? Simply because of its very able description of the terms of the discourse as they stand today. What does that mean? Lots of things, I suppose.

For one, vocations discernment is the prime indicator of the vitality of Church life. Then too, there is ever growing consensus concerning the centrality of the argument in favor of tradition to any discussion of what defines vibrant Church life. I think that, despite the fact that absolute numbers of people and families adhering to the tradition still represent very much a minority report, we have reason to be more than encouraged by the vitality of many existing traditional Catholic Mass communities. They are the hope of the Church. Besides the encouragement we can find in the experience of youth pilgrimages like the annual one to Chartres, Sunday for Sunday our traditional Catholic Mass communities are today more than ever attractive and growing. In part, because of this promise of new life for the Church, I think we can register a change in the way young men today have to face the question of vocational discernment. In the light of the Kwasniewski article, let me briefly discuss, what I consider a key issue for men in love with the tradition contemplating priesthood.

At this historical moment, I believe we do indeed stand at the verge of a page turn, if you so will. Trad diocesan priests, who were so already during formation in the seminary in years gone by, were often so by mental reservation or dissimulation. Not infrequently and by their own admission, they lived the tradition, if you will, in the shadows. Peter Kwasniewski seems to believe those days have probably passed and I would tend to agree with him. The premises are plural which would encourage living in the light of day, but ultimately, it is a matter of seeing open discourse as doable and probably necessary AMDG.

I am not going to rehash his article or his dialogue with "Samuel", but pose a question the article inspires, and which deserves more attention. Namely, Question: Who calls to the priesthood? And, Answer: The Lord Himself in and through His Church calls to priesthood, and hence I am not the artisan of my own call. A vocation is a supernatural calling and it is discerned in the heart of the Church.

Dissimulation or mental reservation concerning the terms of one's call to priesthood was probably always grievously wrong, even if it simply represented an aspiration or will to choose exclusively the Vetus Ordo. So then in honesty, a man can only be called exclusively to the Vetus Ordo, if he is ordained for an Institute, a Priestly Fraternity, a religious order or community, which identifies exclusively with the Vetus Ordo and either is already recognized by the Church or comes to be recognized through application and discernment as provided for by law and custom.

The flip-side of the coin, to state it negatively, is that I cannot perceive my vocation alone and withdraw from the process of discernment, demonstrating mistrust of Mother Church or skepticism concerning her part in discerning a call which genuinely comes from God. If a man is from the outset convinced that his call is to living out the tradition in his ministry, that probably excludes a calling to diocesan priesthood as it is imagined or lived today. That may be a hard row to hoe, but no harder than was facing the resistance which families sometimes put in the way of vocations even back in the "good old days". We need to trust that if the Lord calls, He will clear the path. The road might be rocky and narrow, but it is presently outlined and assured within the community of the Church.

The issue is probably not all that black and white and no doubt those who see things clearly will also seek admission to a community which is Vetus Ordo, simply from their heart's yearning. I cannot imagine anyway that they are legion who rather seek a "promising" bishop and a diocese with space for this kind of growth, if one just keeps his head down in the seminary. For the health of the life of the Church and for the genuine happiness of the young man involved, I think it must be said, that living in the light is not only reasonable, but it is the only option.

Furthermore, as the Kwasniewski article almost intimates, it could very well be that the presuppositions for living out the diocesan priesthood as an ecclesial vocation are indeed breaking down. Not all that long ago, I had occasion to speak with a major seminary rector about how he sees his obligation to the dioceses who entrust their candidates for priesthood to him. I was perplexed by the uncompromising Novus Ordo profile he saw himself obliged to impose, ostensibly it would seem, for the sake of unity and discipline within the Church. What to do? Honestly opt out of that model in favor of existing seminaries devoted to forming men to the Vetus Ordo.

Another option for a diocesan bishop (not for a young candidate) would be to open his own seminary for Vetus Ordo vocations, building a house of formation solely for the sake of offering that type of exclusive service within his diocese... The very thought boggles the mind and throws up countless questions of many very different orders.

Let's remain then, for purposes of reflection and counsel, with the first idea and namely that for our day it might be sufficient and on the verge of earthshaking, if young men would abandon other paths and openly seek to adhere to the tradition within a recognized fraternity or institute so built. My prediction would be that within short order it would become evident that the page had turned and the Holy Spirit was breathing new life into Christ's Church.

As a boy and young man, I often repeated the prayer "Lord, make me a priest after Thine own Heart!" I pray that for others today!

Let the Feast Begin!

TWENTY-FOURTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
Bruder Klaus – 15 September 2019

Ex 32:7-11, 13-14
1 Tm 1:12-17
Lk 15:1-32

Praised be Jesus Christ!

Thinking about today’s First Reading from the Book of Exodus, which tells about Israel in the desert falling away from the worship of the one true God, to worship instead the golden calf that the people themselves had made, I remember as a child thinking just how stupid can you be. These people, with all God had done for them, and there they are worshiping a baby cow!

I suppose if you feed a calf well and scrub it up good then calves can be cute, but they hardly seem worthy of worship or of homage even of a minimal sort. Unfortunately, the matter is not that easily explained and people do even dumber or worse things. My 69 years have taught me the sad reality of how low we human beings can fall. You might say that what shocked me as a child, well, I guess the old man seems to have to take it in stride. It no longer surprises me that people would be willing to put a farm animal up on a pedestal above fellow human beings. Not only in the Old Testament but also in today’s world, people seem capable of putting an animal in God’s place in their lives.

By rights, I should go no farther; I should spend the rest of my homily talking to you about the centrality of Jesus Christ in our lives for our sake and for the sake of the salvation of the world. That would presume, I guess, a different Gospel than Luke 15, however. A preacher just cannot ignore the parable of the prodigal son, his forgiving father and the older brother who takes offense at the father’s rejoicing to have his son home, not only safe and sound but also repentant, truly and humbly sorry for what he had done.

I am not saying that the people in the desert did not deserve condemnation, death and destruction, for having worshiped the golden calf over and above the living and loving God, Who had freed them from the slavery of Egypt. All I am saying is that looking at Luke 15 and the issues of right and wrong, justice or injustice, truth or falsehood, there is more to the problem at hand than firmly condemning idolatry. The attitude of the older son and brother in the Gospel, the point of view generally of any critic or negative observer of human behavior demands our scrutiny. The older son’s impatience with his father and condemnation of his brother especially demands our scrutiny; because more often than not that is the role in life, we ourselves play. You do not necessarily have to be young and inexperienced to fall into being critical of others with all their faults, failings and sins. Many people who are old enough to know better are forever criticizing others. As we learn from the Gospel parable for today, anger over another’s wrongdoing, rage over injustice and seeming double standards for judging the acts of others are nothing new in the world. The older brother is thoroughly upset with his father’s decision to celebrate his brother’s homecoming. He has no time for the loving, generous forgiveness that his father extends to the younger brother, to the prodigal son who comes home deeply sorry for having so foolishly squandered his inheritance. This type of self-righteousness seems to be typical of our world and often considered acceptable behavior.

I would rather make an appeal for the more positive approach to facing another’s crimes and sins, namely, “Let the person without sin cast the first stone!”  The fashion today sadly seems to be to get angry or upset with the wrongdoer. Justice, justice they cry! Justice, fine, but being a Catholic Christian demands much more of us. St. Paul’s watchword to Timothy in the Second Reading has to be ours as well.

“Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners. Of these I am the foremost. But for that reason I was mercifully treated, so that in me, as the foremost, Christ Jesus might display all his patience as an example for those who would come to believe in him for everlasting life.”

Jesus saved us in and through His perfect sacrifice on the Cross. What marks the forgiving father in the parable is not patience in the face of his younger son’s selfish sin, but rather his radical and unqualified love for the young man. He loves his older son no less, but we see the depths of his love for both boys as he watches and waits for the return home of the one who had gone astray in a very hurtful way. There is no restraint on the father’s part, no tactic of wanting to make out of his return a teachable moment. The father sees into the depths of his son’s heart and recognizes that the young man has come to his senses… and he rejoices and calls everyone in the house to rejoice with him.

St. Paul would have us live focused on the bright burning lamp of the father’s loving forgiveness. Most of us rarely have the opportunity, like the servants of the household to be caught up in the father’s joy:

“Quickly bring the finest robe and put it on him; put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet. Take the fattened calf and slaughter it. Then let us celebrate with a feast, because this son of mine was dead, and has come to life again; he was lost, and has been found.”

Saint Paul reminds Timothy and us that life can be otherwise if we cross the line from the crabby older brother’s side to that of the man pardoned:

“Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners. Of these I am the foremost. But for that reason I was mercifully treated, so that in me, as the foremost, Christ Jesus might display all his patience as an example for those who would come to believe in him for everlasting life.”

Just like for the prodigal son so in your life and in mine, the path to joy, the path to freedom, the path to the father’s house, the way back to the one true God goes by way of repentance. Do you live consciously, examining your own conscience each day to see how you may have failed to observe the commandments, the precepts of the Church and the duties of your state in life, making a sincere act of contrition before you go to bed? Is the sacrament of confession, Penance, a regular part of your life? If you are making a daily examination of conscience and act of contrition, without considering cases of mortal sin where you should get to Confession as soon as possible, even with just venial sins you will discover that once a month is not very often to go to Confession.

Dancing around the golden calf, Israel in the desert was completely estranged from its God. The tendency in our world to ignore God, to deny Final Judgment to Him alone to Whom it belongs to pronounce judgment, burdens people and makes them bitter toward all they see around them as unfair. Turning the world over to Jesus, recognizing ourselves as sons and daughters of our heavenly Father, redeemed in Christ’s Blood and eagerly awaiting and awaited at the feast in His Kingdom, that and nothing else should be our goal in life.

The Gospel begins with a call to repentance. That is where it started for the prodigal son and that is where it can begin for us as well. Turn away from sin and be faithful to the Gospel! Come share the Lord’s joy! Let the feast begin!

Praised be Jesus Christ!
